What is Lion Dance?

Waking Lion is a Han Chinese folk culture that combines martial arts, dance and music. It originated in Nanhai County, Guangdong Province, during the Ming Dynasty in China, and is now spread all over the world.

The original name of the Waking Lion is Xiangrui Lion, which means auspiciousness and goodwill. The performance of the Waking Lion is rich in forms, among which the "Caiqing (picking on the heights)" is the essence of the Waking Lion, which is dramatic and storytelling in nature. The lion heads of the Waking Lions are modelled on the open faces of the Three Kingdoms historical figures in Cantonese Opera, and are divided into two main categories, namely the literary lion and the martial arts lion, with the literary lion represented by the lion of Liu Bei, and the martial arts lion by the lions of Guan Gong and Zhang Fei, both of whom are ancient historical figures. It was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. Waking lions are especially prevalent in the Guangdong region of China, and are considered to be a good-luck talisman to ward off evils and avoid harm, and will be used to cheer up every festival or major event.
